What is Lifestyle Photography?

Lifestyle photography is a genre of photography that aims to capture candid and authentic moments of everyday life. Making use of the natural settings and environments that we have in abundance in the Lakes District and Cumbria, and that are familiar to the people being photographed. Unlike traditional portrait photography, which may involve more posed and formal shots, lifestyle photography seeks to document real-life situations, interactions, emotions, and experiences.

In the Lake District and Cumbria a lifestyle photography photoshoot typically involves photos of you interacting with, and enjoying, the natural beauty of the region. All while enjoying your time on your relaxed photoshoot session.

Lifestyle and Family Photography in the Lake District

A brief guide to the Northern Lake District and West Cumbria

The history of Cockermouth dates back to Roman times and was established as a market town in the early thirteenth century. This Gem Town was also the birthplace of William and Dorothy Wordsworth. Cockermouth (or ‘mouth of the Cocker’) developed at the confluence of the Rivers Cocker and Derwent. The Cocker’s name comes from the Celtic word “Kukrã” meaning the crooked one. There are a number of great locations in Cockermouth to meet your Family Photographer, for your Lifestyle Photography. Harris Park offers many winding, tree lined footpaths with easy access to the River Cocker. Nearby is the old railway line, now a footpath that runs through the centre of town. There is also the Memorial Gardens alongside with River Derwent, with views of Cockermouth Castle near Mill Race.

Crummock Water

Situated between Loweswater and Buttermere, Crummock Water is approximately 8 miles from Cockermouth. Grassmoor is on the west of the lake and the fells of Mellbreak are on the east. The River Cocker starts here flowing towards Cockermouth where it meets the River Derwent. Crummock Water is owned by the National Trust. There are a number of great locations alongside Crummock Water for your Family Photography, or to meet your Lifestyle Photographer. From the Lanthwaite Wood car park it is about a 10 minute walk to the waters edge and nearby boathouse. Further down the lakeside is Lanthwaite Green and Rannerdale Knotts which are also perfect locations for photographs, boasting spectacular views.

Buttermere is a small village next to the lake of the same name. as you look down the Buttermere Valley from the top of Honister Pass and nearby Slate Mine you can see the lakes of Buttermere and Crummock Water were originally one post-glacial lake. There are two small hotels in Buttermere, The Bridge Hotel and the Buttermere Court Hotel, formally known as the Fish Inn as mentioned in Alfred Wainwright’s guide books. You can easily walk around Buttermere from the footpath that circumvents the lake. This makes for a great place for a Family Photo Walk with your Lifestyle Photographer. From the National Trust car park in the village it is about a 10 minute walk to the waters edge. There are many place to stop and take photographs with spectacular views across the lake on a short ramble for your photoshoot.

Whinlatter Forest

Whinlatter Forest, often known as England’s only true mountain forest, boasts spectacular views of the surrounding lakes, fells and mountains. From the visitors centre there a many forest trails to walk along as well as play areas nearby. Whinlatter is also popular for dog walkers, cyclists and runners, with many facilities for those who are more adventurous. There are numerous options for photographs at Whinlatter Forest and it is great location to bring dogs too. Any of the forest trails are great place to go with your Family Photographer for some natural Lifestyle Photography. As are the play areas near the visitors centre. We could meet at the cafe and go for a mini adventure at this spectacular location.

St Bees is the most westerly point of Cumbria overlooking the Irish Sea. There is a large sandy beach with a promenade which leads to the coastal footpath of St Bees Head. The cliffs of St Bees Head are made of red sandstone that add some beautiful colours to any photograph. Only a few miles from the Lake District National Park, St Bees is also known for having Saint Bega land there in 850AD. Who doesn’t love a seascape? & with it’s beautiful vistas out across the Irish Sea, St Bees is a fantastic place for Family Photography with a local Lifestyle Photographer. There is excellent parking facilities right by the beach. From here we can walk along the beach, walk over the red sandstone cliffs or go up onto St Bees Head. The nearby Village of Ennerdale Bridge is well appointed with local amenities. You are not far from the cycle path that runs between Whitehaven and the Village of Rowrah too. There are many forest walks around Ennerdale and forest walks are great for relaxed natural photographs. A walk along the lakeside or through the forest makes for an excellent location for lifestyle photography with your family photographer.

On a clear day you can also see the Isle of Man in the distance. Allonby is also a great place to visit for some spectacular sunsets from it’s long sandy beach. There is a long cycleway that runs all the way to promenade of Maryport to the South. The Sandy beach is a great place for children to run and play on too, and is popular with beach goers from all walks of life. Keswick sits on the shores of Derwentwater and is surrounded by mountains such as Skiddaw and Blencathra. On a hilltop to the east of Keswick is Castlerigg Stone Circle which dates back to neolithic times. In the centre of Keswick is The Theatre By The Lake.
