What you need to know to plan your Elopement Wedding in the Lake District.

If you’re dreaming of a secret, just-the-two-of-you Lake District elopement wedding, you’re in excellent company. There’s nowhere quite like this UNESCO World Heritage Site – the lakes, the Cumbrian fells and mountains, a year-round beauty that feels like it was painted by a landscape artist.

With this guide you’ll be taken through everything that you need to know: a guide to wedding venues, how to book a celebrant or registrar, the best times of the year to visit, how to plan, and how to choose the right photographer to bring it all to life.

Many couples choose the Lake District for their elopement wedding because of the stunning natural beauty of the region. The lakes, fells and mountains make a stunning backdrop to wedding photos. Having grown up in West Cumbria, it is a part of my DNA, and there is nothing better than travelling across the region to photograph weddings throughout the Lake District.

With many couples drawn to this beautiful countryside, the Lake District offers the perfect destination location for an elopement wedding, the ultimate for a secret and romantic getaway

An introduction To Lake District Elopement Photography

An elopement wedding is a discreet and very personal alternative to full day wedding celebrations with lots of friends and family. Big weddings are not for everyone and elopement weddings are the ultimate romantic getaway, an adventure to be had with your soulmate. Whether it is just the two of you, or just a few of you, there are many amazing wedding venues throughout the Lake District and Cumbria that offer Elopement Wedding and Micro Wedding packages. Making the Lake District and Cumbria the perfect getaway location for a secret wedding. An Elopement is defined in a dictionary as running away with someone to marry them secretly, and where better to find someone to photograph your secret adventure than a Lake District elopement photographer from the local area.

Many of our Lake District wedding venues specialise in elopement weddings and offer bespoke ‘Just The Two Of Us’ wedding packages. This usually includes a 48hr VIP stay with your wedding ceremony on the second day. My Lake District elopement photography packages start with an hour and a half, or 90 minutes, coverage of your secret wedding. This will give you plenty of time for the ceremony to be photographed, relaxed photos at your wedding venue and even some lakeside photos too. I get to spend more time on couple portraits during an elopement wedding than I do on a full wedding day, which allows for a good variety of relaxed and romantic photos after the wedding ceremony. It will feel like we’re old friends in no time and I can help you celebrate without being to much a third wheel as your Lake District elopement photographer.

Why The Lake District Is One of The UK’s Most Romantic Wedding Destinations

The Lake District has a way of making every moment feel spectacular. The mountains and fells, picturesque lakes, and towns and villages that all look like they’ve come straight out of a Constable painting or from the pages of Beatrix Potter – it’s the ultimate backdrop for couples who want something breathtakingly timeless and quintessentially British.
It’s also a destination that rewards good planning.

Distances around the lakes can be surprising, light moves quickly across the valleys, and venues have quirks you’ll want to know about. That’s why having a photographer familiar with the area makes everything run smoother and your photos more breathtaking.

Loved by poets, landscape artists and authors and often featuring as a backdrop for TV and films, there’s a reason that people are drawn to the natural beauty of the Lake District. The landscape was carved by glaciers in the ice age, leaving behind deep valleys, sprawling fells and rocky mountains, and of course the many lakes that make up the region. It’s this beautiful backdrop that draws couples to get married in the Lake District, a World Heritage site that has no equal. Every photograph captures a beautiful landscape with you as the focal point on your wedding day. What’s not to love about that?

Essential Planning Tips for Your Lake District Elopement

Each season brings its own mood to the Lake District. Here’s what couples should expect.

Allow for extra time during your day

Travel from one location to another in the Lake District can takes longer than expected – especially during the busy summer season. Always allow extra time and generous buffers so your day feels relaxed, not rushed.

  • Think about where you would like to have photos and much time you would like spend there.
  • Create a timeline of either 15 or 30 minute periods that you can allocate to the different things that you what like to do.
  • Even if you are planning to stay at your venue allow time for walking fomr one photo location to another.
  • Check afternoon teat and meal service times at your venue so that you timings for photos son’t clash.

Have a wet weather plan

The Lake District is generally considered to be the wettest place in the UK. Each of the Lake District’s valleys can also have their own little micro climates, and the weather can be quite changeable between locations. While most couples will always hope for the perfect weather for their wedding it’s always best to have a wet weather plan.

  • Think about your options for your ceremony and photos if it is raining on your wedding day.
  • Even in the summer, the weather can be very mixed so have a back-up plan for your photos and where you’d like to go if your venturing outside.
  • Umbrellas, waterproofs and shoes with a good grip are a must of it’s et and windy. Also have a change of wedding shoes/socks back at your venue just in case.
  • Plan for the worse weather but hope for the best. Having a wet weather plan means that you’re prepared and it won’t affect your enjoyment of your wedding day.
  • Don’t obsess over the weather forecast, you’ll only worry. Forecasts only get closer to accuracy within a few days and even then it can change dramatically. The Met Office website, in my experience, is usually the best place to check for accurate forcasts.

Choose a local photographer

A local photographer will know the area and it’s associated quirks as well as any rules or requirements at your wedding venue. They’re worth their weight especially when it comes to liaising with your venue and other local suppliers, and also hwere the best locations are for your wedding photos and how to get there.

  • Ask potential photographers if they have worked at your venue before and know the area.
  • Ask to see examples of elopements they have previously photographed at your venue or nearby.
  • If you are planning to leave your venue to go to other locations for your photographs, how are you going to get there. Does your photographer know the way and how to get around traffic if the Lake District roads are busy?

Frequently Asked Questions About Lake District Weddings

Here are the questions I am most commonly asked as an expert Lake Como wedding photographer. Use the Kadence schema-enabled accordion block below or swap for a Yoast FAQ schema block.

I love how the Lake District changes between seasons and you can always find something beautiful around you. My soft spot for times of year are the spring when the trees are starting grow their leaves back and there’s blossom everywhere. I also love early autumn as the colours start to change and the early evening sunlight is just gorgeous.

Once you have found the wedding venue you would like to get married at you will then need to contact the local registration service to book your wedding ceremony and ceremony time. If you plan to use a celebrant it’s best to liaise with them on timings and any specifics for your wedding ceremony. Do bear in mind thought that in England only a registrar from the local council registrations service can legally marry you in a civil ceremony.

Before flying a drone in the Lake District you need to consider any restrictions in place on the local airspace, Civil Aviation Authority rules and regulations, the weather, and also any restrictions in place at a wedding venue. Fortunately in the Lake District it is usually okay to fly a drone for aerial photography and most wedding venues are happy for you to do so provided the correct insurance is in place. It is always best to check with each individual wedding venue as well as any local restrictions depending on where you are in the Lake District.

Prices for elopement photography can vary with factors such as the experience and skillset of the photographer having an impact. The most expensive isn’t necessarily the best photographer and the cheapest isn’t necessarily the best value. My advice is always to find a photographer who’s portfolio you really like, that you can see really adding value to your day and who you really get along with. You can find my own pricing for elopement photography here

It all depends on the time of year you are planning your elopement wedding for. In the summer, even though the days are longer and generally brighter, if it’s a hot sunny day it’s best to avoid mid-afternoon photos if at all possible. However there are plenty of wooded areas for shade and careful planning can help make your photos still look amazing. Overcast days are generally better for photography when the light is more even. Ideally golden hour is always a gorgeous time of day to have your photo taken.

It depends on the time of year you are getting married, how long you would like to book for your photography and most importantly what the weather is like on your wedding day. In the summer golden hour will be mid to late evening. Whereas in early spring and late autumn golden hour is in the late afternoon. I photographed the most magical elopement at the end of November and the whole time I was working there was the most beautiful golden hour for the photos. You can read about that wedding here
