A newlywed couple share a tender moment over a gate in a snowy field with snow-covered mountains behind them

The Broadoaks Country House Wedding of Jaime and James

This beautifully snowy Broadoaks Country House wedding took place in January. There had been a couple of days of snow in the Lake District that had started to thaw a little, but there was still plenty of snow around for Jamie and James’ wedding day. It was also very cold; it’s not often that you see the fountain at Broadoaks frozen, which did look spectacular in the evening light. I also fell in a snowdrift up on Kirkstone Pass. Well, to be more accurate, I took a side step to get into position for a photo and kind of disappeared up to my waist in snow. As you do. I still got the shot though; that was by far the most important thing at the time. Falling into things, as well as dropping things, has been a bit of a theme for me at weddings this year. My report card will have to state, “Must try harder not to fall over and drop things.”

Jaime and James’ intimate wedding was conducted in two parts. The legal bit was first, followed by a mad dash on snowy roads up a mountain pass to the top of Kirkstone Pass for photos (did I mention that I fell into a snowdrift?). Followed by a mad dash back to Broadoaks for more photos, including confetti and a few cute family photographs for Jaime and James, and the wedding breakfast. After the meal there was a second, more intimate humanist ceremony conducted in front of a roaring fire in the Music Room.

It was a brilliant little wedding and a great way to start my 2025 wedding season. Jamie and James were really good with all of the snow and the cold. Me, less so. I did fall into a snowdrift after all!
