A Guide to Family Photography in the Lake District

A Guide to Family Photography in the Lake District

Are you a family? Are you coming to the Lake District? Are you thinking of where might be a good place for some family photos during your stay? Then look no further, in this handy guide I will share my top tips on the how, the when and the where for family photography in the Lake District.

Families come in all shapes and sizes and you might be looking for a newborn photographer or someone who can photograph you and the dogs. Maybe you have a couple of pre-teen kids, and you want some cherished photos of you and them while they’re still children in the stunning Lake District landscape. Maybe it’s a big family gathering for a special occasion, and you would like a local photographer to come along and capture you all together. Whatever your reasons, the Lake District offers the perfect backdrop for some stunning lifestyle and family photography in the great outdoors.

Where is the best location for family photography in the Lake District?

I love living in Cumbria, and I love photographing people in Cumbria. There are lots of brilliant locations in Cumbria for photography, all of which offer something special in the Lake District scenery. We have sandy beaches in locations such as St Bees on the West Coast or Grange-over-Sands on the South Coast. There are woodland and forest walks in numerous locations around the county. Favourites of mine include a walk around Buttermere or White Moss Woods, which is nestled between Rydal Water and Grasmere. If you fancy exploring a cave, how about starting at White Moss and hiking up to Rydal Cave or going to explore Cathedral Caves in Little Langdale? We really are spoilt for choice when it comes to great locations for a family photoshoot in the Lake District. The perfect location will depend on your needs, so why don’t we start there, and I can then advise what the best options are going to be for your family photos. Finally, maybe the perfect location is the comfort of your own home for photos of you and your newborn baby.

How do I find the best family photographer in the Lake District?

Hi, hello, hey there. Let me reintroduce myself. I’m Jaye, and I’m a Lake District photographer. Ta-dah, search over! Maybe.

When looking for a Lake District family photographer, you’ll want to be able to look at their previous work and portfolios, editing style and any information on how they work. Select a couple to compare the portfolios of and get in touch to see if they are the right fit for your family photo session. Personally I like to keep my photo sessions relaxed and fun (especially with children) and not too posey. If you would like a more formal-looking photoshoot, I try to make sure that this is gently directed so that you are all relaxed in front of the camera. Which is important because the more relaxed you are, and the more you are enjoying your time with me during your photoshoot, the more that will show in your photos.

How much does family photography cost in the Lake District?

Prices will vary from photographer to photographer and is usually based on their experience as well as the standard of their work. The cost of family photography in the Lake District can also depend on how many photographs you would like, if you want these as digital downloads, or if you would like printed photos included. Arranging for your family photoshoot to take place in a couple of Lake District locations might also include additional fees to visit multiple locations.

My advice is to look for a photographer that offers family photography packages. That way you know exactly what’s included in a package and how much you are paying. I offer three family photoshoot packages, with each including a number of digital downloads as well as some printed photographs. Your photos are delivered in an online gallery where you will be able to choose the photos that you want to receive as downloads and prints. If you would like any extras, you can also order additional downloads, photo prints and wall art (such as canvases) through the gallery at a 25% discount for the first few weeks.

How do I book a Lake District family photographer?

To make a booking, you simply need to get in touch with me via email or my contact form. You can also send me a message through WhatsApp or call me for a chat. Once I’ve confirmed my availability, there will be a small deposit to pay, and all the booking details can be completed through an online client portal.

When will I receive my edited family photoshoot photos?

I always aim to deliver a fully edited photo gallery as soon as I can after the family photoshoot, but turnaround times can vary throughout the year. Generally speaking during busy periods, such as peak wedding season in the Spring and Summer, editing can take 3 to 4 weeks (sometimes longer) depending on my workload. During the Autumn and Winter this is more likely to be 1 to 2 weeks. After your family photoshoot I will let you know how long I think it will take me to complete the editing process, and you are always welcome to send me a message to ask for an editing update at any point.

How do we choose which family photoshoot photos we would like to have?

You can choose the photos you would like to receive from your family photoshoot by creating a list of favourites in your online gallery. When viewing your photos, you will notice a heart icon underneath each one. Selecting the heart icon marks the photo as a favourite. Once you’ve selected multiple favourites, you will be able to review your favourites list from the menu. As soon as you have completed this, contact me to let me know, and I will be able to see which photos are in the list. If you’ve chosen a package that includes some printed photos, I just need to know which photo numbers these are.
