Ben and Leanne’s Broadoaks Country House Wedding
A gloriously sunny Lake District wedding near Windermere
When I think about Ben and Leanne, I am always going to remember a couple who are quite backwards. Literally backwards. At least Ben is, after he walked up and down Kilimanjaro backwards for charity. What a superstar!
Their wedding day at Broadoaks Country House, one of the Lake District’s finest wedding venues, wasn’t at all a backwards affair. In fact, it was utterly brilliant.
“Why was Ben and Leanne’s Broadoaks Country House wedding brilliant?” I imagine anyone reading this might ask.
First of all, I had been looking forward to photographing this one ever since I first met them. With some couples, you really do go on a journey with them as they plan their wedding. As the juggernaut that was their wedding day hurtled along, I was just the small wedding photographer hanging on at the back, trying not to let go while shouting out my best wedding photography and planning advice.
That juggernaut safely arrived over one of the hottest bank holiday weekends the Lake District had seen in years—and what a day it turned out to be.
The journey to Ben and Leanne’s wedding day
Ben and Leanne, you are both amazing, and the friendship we have developed since you first popped into my inbox is a testament to the beautiful humans you both are.
My dry sense of humour and daft jokes? Not a problem—you still warmed to me.
The outrageous and comical suggestions about things you should do for your wedding? No worries—you laughed with me. Even if I was the only one who found them funny.
The highs and lows of wedding planning? I was able to be there to support you both.
A late-evening hike up a fell for your pre-wedding photoshoot? You just went with it and trusted me to deliver some amazing photographs.
Your wedding day? It all came together perfectly.
An effortless, natural and authentic wedding day
Ben and Leanne’s wedding had so many brilliant moments and was full of non-stop fun and laughter. When I’m photographing away, you can either laugh with me or laugh at me—and these guys chose both!
My approach to wedding photography is effortless, natural and authentic. Rather than turning their day into one long photoshoot, I documented everything as it unfolded and definitely didn’t egg on the band to do lots of “rock star” poses.
Definitely not.
But even if I did, it meant Ben and Leanne could enjoy being with the people who mattered most to them while having the best day ever.
The smiles even stayed on their faces when I missed half of the speeches because nobody came to find me and let me know they had started. I definitely haven’t mentioned that to them since the wedding either.
When it was time to take Ben and Leanne down to the lake for photographs, we kept things natural and made the most of Windermere and the beautiful Lake District surroundings.
I definitely didn’t drop my camera on the jetty either. I certainly didn’t scream as it bounced towards the water—and I definitely didn’t use any profanities when I caught it just in time, stubbing a finger in the process.
A sunny Broadoaks Country House wedding
Broadoaks Country House is one of the Lake District’s loveliest wedding venues. Set close to Windermere, it has a relaxed country-house atmosphere, beautiful grounds and plenty of character.
It also has a brilliant wedding team.
Mikey is one of the best wedding coordinators in the Lakes, keeping everything moving while making the whole thing look effortless. The rest of Team Broadoaks were equally wonderful and helped Ben and Leanne’s plans come together perfectly.
The glorious bank holiday weather meant everyone could make the most of the grounds, although describing it as “warm” would be a slight understatement. It was one of those rare Lake District days when nobody needed to keep nervously checking the rain forecast!
